Cold work tool steel
ALTA 1.2080 Tool Steel Specification
Steel properties
ALTA 1.2080 (Cr12% version) steel is one of the representative steel grades of high carbon and high chromium cold work die steel. Containing extremely high amounts (mass fraction) of C: 1.90%~2.20% and Cr: 11.00%~13.00%, it is a ledeburite steel, so it have a high hardenability, hardening capacity and wear resistance, and small deformation during quenching.
1.2080 was one of the most popularly used cold work tool steels, but has been gradually replaced by other better (Cr12% version) steels such as Cr12MoV, X12MФ, SKD11, D2, 1.2379 etc.
It is mainly used for cold stamping die working parts (punch and concave dies) that require high wear resistance and small impact load, and the concave dies of cold extrusion dies. Due to its obvious advantages and disadvantages, its use areas has been restricted.
Applications
² Commonly used in the manufacture of cold blanking dies, punches, cold shear knives, cold rolls, drill bushings and wire drawing dies which are subjected to low impact loads and have high wear
² Gauges, cam pins, eccentric wheels, etc
